The DHS's "enforcement-only" policy is straight out of the anti-immigrant political agenda, By its one-sided emphasis on workplace raids, arrests, detention and mass deportation of suspected illegal immigrants, while throwing roadblocks in the way of people who are trying to comply with the law through adopting overly-strict and often improper uSCIS adjudication standards, the DHS is placing itself squarely on the side of those who want to cut off legal, as well as illegal immigration. Any employer who files a proper petition according to law and has it approved is now likely to be investigated by USCIS, ICE or both. What more chilling effect could there be on legal immmigration?
If America is to cease being a nation of immigrants, that should be up to Congress, not the DHS, to decide. The job of the DHS is to enforce the law, not pander to anti-immigrant prejudice. Our laws not only permit, but strongly favor, immigration.
Why the contribution is important
My idea is important because the DHS's current emphasis on enforcement, not enabling, immigration, reflects a bias that is counter to the spirit and purpose of the immigration laws. It is in danger of wrecking the entire immigration system. This bias also betrays America's historic mission and role as a nation of immigrants. It adds to racial tensions and gives aid and comfort to anti-Latino and anti-Asian bigots by targeting minority immuigrants. The DHS needs to get out of the business of taking sides, making policy, and pendering to popular anti-immigrant prejudice. It should stick to its mission of following the law, which is strongly in favor of immigration in both letter and spirit.
