Currently each applicant needs a visa number to be available in order to become a permanent resident. Instead of this, all dependent applicants should be counted against the primary applicant. This way more visa numbers will be availabe for legal immigrants as each family will need 1 visa number, regardless of applicants.

Why the contribution is important

My idea is imprtant because US is known as a country buid by immigrants. It is important to encourage legal immigration. Making it it easier for legally immigrating to the US will make illigal immigration less attractive and tempting. Legal immigration will also mean more revenue and taxes for the country.

Even legal immigration, since 1965, revolves around family reunification policies. Thus even legal immigrants are still in a position to sponsor less desirable family members. We already have over two million foreign retirees who are collecting SSI benefits, and the estimate is that this will rise to 16 million by 2050. How can we pay for these people when they have not contributed in to the Social Security system? We need to change the family reunification policies so that no one further than a spouse or minor child can be sponsored.

The problem is legal immigration is taking 10+ years and most of us whom have paid into the system will be qualifed for SS but can't live in this country legally. How about minor children that aged out while waiting 15+ years for a Green card? Should they be forced out of the country because the legal process takes forever?
