The use of the mandatory use of the E-Verify system by the employer to ensure that a prospective non-U.S. citizen employee is legally able to work in this country is a very effective means of discouraging illegal immigration while making more jobs available for U.S. citizens and legal immigrants.  This should be a federally mandated requirment for all U.S. employers.  However, the DHS enforcement focus should be more focused on employer sanctions such as denying federal contracts to federal contractors who repeatedly violate the E-verify requirement that should be incorporated into all federal contracts.

Why the contribution is important

My idea will reduce the employer's economic advantage to hire illegal immigrants and thus reduce the number of persons illegally entering the U.S.  Strigent enfrocment action at this level will also reduce the workload of the U.S. Border patrol and allow them to focus more on criminal activities.

While the FY 2010 budget does propose 112 million to fund e-Verify systems, they will do little without increased focus on employer sanctions for failing to use the system or disregarding the results.

When something works as reliably as this, it should be continued and, most importantly, enforced. Without enforcement, it's toothless.
